Defensive Pistol & Concealed Carry Applications – The Responsible Carry Experience is Bear Arms Training’s flagship concealed carry and defensive handgun course. Designed for responsible citizens, this program develops the knowledge, practical skills, and mindset needed to safely carry a firearm for personal protection.
Through classroom instruction, live-fire exercises, and real-world defensive scenarios, you’ll learn how to make sound decisions, improve your shooting performance, understand Virginia’s use-of-force laws, and carry with confidence—not hesitation

COURSE DETAILS
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Prerequisite: Basic handgun experience *recommended, BUT NOT NECESSARY.
Duration: 8 Hours
Training Environment: Classroom & Live Fire
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
Students should bring:
- Reliable handgun (semi-automatic pistol or revolver)
- Minimum of 2 magazines (3 recommended)
- Quality concealed carry holster
- (No SERPA or drop-leg holsters permitted.)
- Magazine pouch (recommended)
- Sturdy gun belt
- Concealment garment (shirt, jacket, sweatshirt, or vest)
- Eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Baseball cap (recommended)
- 250 rounds of factory ammunition 9mm FMJ (*not included)
- Water
- Lunch
- Notebook and pen
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Closed-toe shoes
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need a Concealed Handgun Permit?
No. This course prepares you to carry responsibly whether you currently have your permit or plan to obtain one. You must be 21 years old at the time of your submission of your paperwork to the state. You can take the class within 1-year from your birthday if desiring a CCW Permit.
Can I take this class with limited experience?
Yes.Students should understand basic firearm safety and operation. If you’re brand new to firearms, we recommend completing Defender Ready or Ladies First – The Women’s Handgun Experience first.
Is this a permit class?
Yes.
What if I don’t own all the required equipment?
Contact Bear Arms Training before class. We’re happy to help you choose the right equipment and answer any questions before your training day.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Bear Arms Training Certificate of Completion and can use to obtain thier multi-state CCW.
