Eligibility and Prerequisites
The NRA CCW course is open to participants aged 18 and over, regardless of background or experience. However, applying for your concealed carry permit within the Commonwealth of Virginia is 21. While prior firearm training is not mandatory, completing a basic firearms course before enrolling is recommended. Our dedicated instructors support you in establishing a strong foundation in concealed carry principles while maintaining a strong level of safety for all participants.
Live-Fire Session
The highlight of the NRA CCW course is applying your newfound knowledge into practice during the live-fire training session. Conducted at one of our partnered ranges, the live-fire session takes place at the end of the course. You will receive personalized guidance from our Certified Instructors, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience.
Equipping Yourself
To participate in the live-fire portion, you will need 250 rounds of dependable, jacketed ammunition—factory or re-manufactured. Federal American Eagle, Fiocchi, PMC, Independence, or MagTech are who we recommend. Students are required to bring their own firearms, holsters (NO SERPA or DROP LEG), magazine pouches, concealed garments (e.g., shirt, jacket), protective shooting glasses, ear protection, and a good belt. Students are expected to wear their firearms during the duration of the course. Your firearm is either in the holster, at the ready, or on the target- no exceptions. DO NOT remove your firearm in without instruction. We prioritize safety above all else, so you can focus on learning and honing your shooting skills. Our instructors are dedicated to an exceptional level of safety in each course. Any violation of that safety and the student will be removed from the course immediately.

FAQs
To foster enhanced clarity, let’s address common inquiries:
Can I Enroll in This Class with No Prior Experience?
Absolutely, you’re welcome to join this course without any prior experience. However, please be aware that while we embrace all levels of learners, Bear Arms Training retains the discretion to dismiss any student exhibiting unsafe behavior towards themselves or others during the course. We highly recommend that participants in this course consider completing a basic safety course before diving into EDC 1.0.
Is Equipment Rental Available, or Should I Bring My Own?
Yes, equipment rental is an option, but we do have a limited supply available. We strongly advise students enrolled in this course to come with their own equipment. If you require guidance in choosing the appropriate pistol, holster, and magazine pouch prior to the course, please don’t hesitate to contact our office – we’re here to assist. For those interested in renting our gear, please give our office a call for pricing details.
Am I Allowed to Bring My Own Firearm and Ammunition?
Certainly, we highly encourage it. However, if you opt to bring your own firearms and ammunition, it’s important to ensure they comply with the regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Throughout the course, firearms must be either cased or holstered at all times, unless instructed otherwise by our instructors.
What's the Ratio of Range Time to Classroom Time?
An excellent question! The course is designed with a balanced approach – roughly a 50/50 split between time spent in the classroom and on the range. During the range portion, which lasts about three to four hours, you’ll have the opportunity to put the classroom knowledge into practice, assess your skills, and identify areas for improvement.
Do I Get a Certificate After Finishing the Course?
Absolutely; once you successfully complete the course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion provided by Bear Arms Training. If you haven’t obtained your concealed carry permit yet, this course will qualify you to receive your concealed carry permit, which is reciprocated in thirty-six states pursuant to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
What Does the Qualification Involve?
To earn your nationally recognized certificate, each student needs to successfully pass a shooting qualification. This assessment confirms your proficiency both on the range and in the classroom.
