Thank you for registering for Fighting Handgun Concepts & Dry Fire Clinic with Adam Winch. Hosted by Bear Arms Training, this course is designed for experienced handgun shooters who are ready to move beyond traditional square-range shooting and develop practical, real-world defensive handgun skills.
This packet contains important information to help you prepare for a safe, productive, and challenging weekend of training.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This is not a beginner handgun course. Students should already possess safe firearm handling skills, be comfortable drawing from a quality holster, and understand the fundamentals of marksmanship. Throughout this 2.5-day program, students will develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary to fight effectively with a handgun under realistic conditions.

- Height-over-bore and bullet trajectory
- Acceptable versus precision accuracy
- Building efficient draw strokes
- Recoil management
- Shooting at realistic defensive speeds
- Shooting while moving
- Dynamic movement and positional shooting
- One-handed handgun operation Injured shooter techniques
- Ground fighting with a handgun
- Close-contact handgun employment
- Protecting and moving family members or third parties
- Decision-making under stress
- Vehicle considerations
- Defensive problem-solving
*This course is physically and mentally demanding and is designed to challenge experienced shooters in a safe and structured learning environment.
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Adam Winch Founder & Lead Instructor Defenders USA Adam Winch is a nationally recognized firearms instructor, Master Instructor, and former military and law enforcement professional with extensive real-world operational experience.
He has trained military personnel, law enforcement officers, instructors, and responsibly armed citizens throughout the United States. Adam’s teaching philosophy emphasizes practical performance over square-range marksmanship. His instruction combines efficient handgun manipulation, movement, decision-making, and defensive problem-solving rooted in real-world experience.
Students can expect individualized coaching, measurable performance standards, and a challenging—but supportive—learning environment.
TRAINING SCHEDULE
Dry Fire Clinic
Friday Evening – 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
*Friday evening begins with an in-depth Dry Fire Clinic designed to establish the foundation for the weekend.
Topics include:
- Efficient handgun presentation
- Visual processing Trigger control
- Recoil management concepts
- Building an effective dry-fire program
- Diagnosing shooting performance
- Purposeful practice methods
*This session provides the “why” behind high-level handgun performance and prepares students for the live-fire training to follow.
Saturday 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Saturday begins with safety verification, accuracy confirmation, and handgun handling assessment before progressing into:
- Precision shooting
- Draw stroke refinement
- Recoil management
- Personal speed development
- Shooting while moving
- Close-range applications
- Dynamic movement drills
Sunday 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Training expands into more advanced applications including:
- Ground fighting techniques
- Unconventional shooting positions
- One-handed shooting
- Protecting others
- Dynamic movement
- Decision-based engagements Integrated defensive exercises
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a moderately physical training course. Students should be capable of: Standing for extended periods Walking over uneven terrain Kneeling Squatting Moving safely to and from the ground Performing repeated positional transitions while safely handling a loaded handgun Students should also expect mentally demanding drills requiring sound judgment, awareness, and safe gun handling throughout the weekend.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
Students should bring:
- Reliable semi-automatic handgun
- Strong-side belt holster (OWB or approved IWB)
- Minimum of three magazines (five recommended)
- Magazine pouches
- Approximately 1,000 rounds of factory ammunition
- Eye protection Hearing protection (electronic recommended)
- Baseball cap
- Knee pads (recommended)
- Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)
- Tourniquet (CAT Gen 7 or SOF-T Wide recommended)
- Cleaning kit and lubricant
- Note-taking materials
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
From I-66 (Front Royal) Take Exit 6 toward Front Royal. Follow US-340 South to VA-55 West. Turn onto Fort Valley Road (VA-678).
Continue approximately 8 miles, turn left onto Dry Run Road, then right onto Boyer Road. From I-81 (Strasburg) Take Exit 296 and follow VA-55 East toward Front Royal.
Turn right onto Fort Valley Road (VA-678). Continue approximately 8 miles, turn left onto Dry Run Road, then right onto Boyer Road.
